3D Book creation in AE

Guess what... yes it's Saturday... and I decided to have some fun with After Effects, and try and create a basic 3D book, and then fly it around in space using a null object to control the whole thing.

TIP #1: I used the Object Camera Tool to view the different perspectives
TIP #2: I used Orientation to create the rotations

This might make a fun class exercise...

Gidget passed away yesterday....

LOS ANGELES— Handlers say Gidget the Chihuahua, whose Taco Bell [YUM] commercials made her a star, has died. She was 15.
The owner of Studio Animal Services in Castaic says Gidget suffered a massive stroke late Tuesday at her trainer’s home in Santa Clarita and had to be euthanized.
Gidget was the sassy mascot in Taco Bell commercials from 1997 to 2000. While other dogs had bit parts, it was her bug-eyed, big-eared face that is seen pronouncing, in a dubbed male voice, "Yo quiero Taco Bell," Spanish for "I want Taco Bell."

The ads made the Taco Bell mascot wildly popular, although they provoked some criticism from activists who felt they used Mexican stereotypes.
Gidget also had a role in the movie "Legally Blonde 2."

Creating Visionary Art

Your creativity is your birthright. Your ability to connect with others, human-to-human, is your birthright.

Yet both your natural, joyful creativity and your relationships are challenged by soul-killing forces like obsessive productivity and thoughtless hierarchy.

Fortunately, though, in this time of rapid change, visionary innovators are forging inspiring alternatives. From them, you can learn to:

Create and experience art as a doorway to your inner freedom and deepest consciousness free of commodification.

Live your relationships as an open-hearted, neo-tribal celebration of your community's full expression

Reclaim ancient traditions of illuminating ritual -- toward a continual awakening of the very things that make you human

How does visionary art help us create community?  Art and performance can not only inspire and delight -- they can transform your level and quality of engagement with the world and with community. These calls will explore visions as well as practical steps you can take today – on the personal, local and planetary levels.

Featured guests include visionary painter Alex Grey, ritualist and filmmaker Antero Alli, neo-tribal festival producer Jen Zariat, and the legendary Larry Harvey, the founder of Burning Man.

MUSIC IS MEDICINE: Sacred Singing, Healing Harmonies.

Modern neuroscience is affirming what vocalists and shamans have known
for years: Singing is healthy for you; and specific vocal styles that
play on 'harmonic overtones' stimulate the sense of well-being.

Harmonic overtones are embedded within sacred choral music performed
worldwide.

In this introductory workshop, you will hear and learn how Tibetan
monks, Gregorian chanters and Mongolian overtone singers create the
powerful healing and meditative qualities associated with ritual
chanting and overtone harmonics.

A complementary instructional DVD is bundled with the workshop.

Don Hill is a former host of Tapestry on CBC Radio One. His one-hour
television documentary, Chants Encounter profiled harmonic overtone
singers from around the world.

The two-day course has been taught to clinical therapists, hospital
and palliative care workers, musicians and contemplatives of every sort.

"Excellent instructor, a fountain of knowledge," wrote one evaluator.
"Don Hill is top notch!" Course participants have also written, "he
delivers the content clearly and in a stimulating fashion.” Overall
the course is “very inspiring."

The introductory workshop will be held in MONTREAL: Friday 10 JULY
(beginning at 7 PM) and all day Saturday 11 JULY at 5706 Queen Mary
Road (Hampstead). Six positions still open.

In EDMONTON: Friday 21 AUGUST (beginning at 7 PM) and all day
Saturday 22 AUGUST at the Westwood Unitarian Congregation church at
11135 - 65 Avenue (close to the Parkallen community centre). Four
positions remain open.

BE HERE: Demystifying the Creative City June 18th

Fuse Magazine and Creative Class Struggle presents:
Town Hall: Demystifying the Creative City

The Town Hall will be followed with Dj’s, Dancing and the Launch Party for Fuse Magazine’s newest issue, Goliath vs Goliath

Toronto Free Gallery
1277 Bloor Street West
Thursday June 18, 2009
Doors Open at 6:30 pm
Panel Begins at 7pm to 8:30
Party from - 9pm to 1am

Fuse Magazine and activists collective Creative Class Struggle are holding a Town Hall to talk about the real effects of the Creative City model currently produced in planning trends in communities across the city and globally. This conversation is intended to demystify this celebration and use of “creativity” in economic development, land use planning, arts programming and community development. We are responding to these recent trends, popularized by urban researchers like Richard Florida.

The Creative City logic, advertises places of innovation, style and interactivity as places that will attract both business and the “creative class” – urban professionals and culture workers. This perspective, critiqued by some academics and policy makers for its vagueness and others for privileging certain types of jobs, neighbourhoods and lifestyles at the expense of others is increasingly controversial. In this Town Hall, artists, activist, community workers, teachers and professors will be brought together to examine the realities of living under this policy paradigm. We will ask: what are the effects of these policies on the livelihoods of ordinary people? Who benefits from creative city planning that is meant to build money making cities in a time of cuts to vital services such as schools and important social spaces for “ordinary” people such as community centres, and pools. What happens to the “non-creative” workers in this script?

The panel’s goal is to address topics of race, class and gender, within the framework of the 'creative class’, exploring how these policies celebrate a select group of glorified yet precarious professions and how cities are being re-structured and re-branded as money-makers, rather than places that offer secure livelihoods for their residents.

After the panel, we will bring together activists, academics, artists and workers for a Town Hall to discuss the increasing dominance of creative city ideas and policies. Through discussion we aim to demystify the politics concealed in the Creative Class ideology.

We have invited groups from across the city to contribute critiques and concerns based on their political organizing and/or personal experience. We plan to record this discussion and create a document that is intended to provide a thoughtful critique of the creative class script.
The panel includes the following speakers:

Liette Gilbert - associate Professor, Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University. Her work focuses on policies, practices and ideologies of immigration, multiculturalism and citizenship.

Uzma Shakir - community-based researcher, advocate, activist and the past Executive Director of Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA) and the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO). Her work focuses on issues of race, erosion of civil liberties and critical multiculturalism.

Pamila Matharu - a Toronto-based artist, educator and cultural organizer/ producer. Pamila’s work currently focuses on youth, contemporary art, pedagogy and the "inner-city experience" in Parkdale.

Canadian Interactive Industry Profile Released!!!

Nearly half - 46 per cent - of industry revenue is generated through two task categories: Game Design and Development, and Website Design and Development

Download the report: http://www.ciaic.ca/

"The 2008 Canadian Interactive Industry Profile clearly shows the future potential of this fast-growing segment of the knowledge economy," said Ian Kelso, President of the CIAIC and President and CEO of Interactive Ontario. "We believe that the story of Canada's interactive digital media and its contribution to our country's GDP, employment base and global competitiveness has only just begun to be told."

Companies participating in the 2008 edition of the CIIP, which is at present the only national study of Canada's interactive media industry, reported that revenue from interactive digital media work grew a remarkable 50.9 per cent between 2006 and 2008, and a respectable 17.4 per cent rate of growth in revenue from all sources over the same period.

Other national-level statistics of note from the 2008 CIIP include:

1. The vast majority - 85 per cent - of companies are wholly Canadian-owned;
2. 60 to 70 per cent of interactive media projects are based on original intellectual property;
3. Nearly half - 46 per cent - of industry revenue is generated through two task categories: Game Design and Development, and Website Design and Development;
4. A full third of respondents said they performed work in five or more interactive digital media task categories.

Dr. Marilyn S. Miller: How to cope with stagefright

Dr. Marilyn S. Miller is a registered psychologist providing career and personal counseling in Toronto. She has worked with performers and business professionals since 1981 and is “particularly aware of the special needs of creative people.”

A matter of confidence
People who suffer from stage fright tend to tell themselves things like, “I will never survive this,” or “I will never overcome this,” and it’s this thinking that causes the destructive response. Often stage fright is inspired by a fear of failure, or of public humiliation or embarrassment. We need to believe that failures are learning experiences, not closed doors. We often learn more from our mistakes and failures than we learn from our successes. I don’t know who said it, but I like the statement, “Failure is not having failed, it’s failing to get up again.”

Get used to it!
Stage fright never goes away, and this is an aspect of reality that people need to come to terms with. Being professional means learning to perform regardless of stage fright. What you need to focus on is: “I am obligated to do what I’ve auditioned to do, or what I’ve been accepted to do, regardless of my feelings.” Acknowledge your anxiety, yes, but then complete the message with the thought that, “Nevertheless, regardless of how I feel, I am going to do my best.”

A motivating energy
When we are in a high state of arousal, whether we’re frightened or euphoric, the physiology is very similar; it’s the message we’re telling ourselves when we’re in that state of arousal. It’s a matter of redefining the anxiety, of giving a positive interpretation to those feelings. Stage fright is just a normal part of performing, a form of anxiety which can also be a beneficial, motivating energy as opposed to a scary feeling.

Mature ego
A mature person’s identity and self-concept are not overly tied to their performance. They understand that a given performance is simply a temporary action or situation, and they know that they are bigger than this one moment, and that they will survive regardless of the outcome of the next hour or two on stage.

On stage you’re an actor
An important skill for any performer is plain old acting, the ability to fake confidence and calmness. It’s a life skill we learn early on; as children being teased by other kids we pretend that it doesn’t bother us, and right there we’re learning valuable skills. Now, some performers respond that if they’re faking it then they aren’t being authentic. Well, it’s not about being authentic, it’s about being responsible. You have a job to do.

Focus on the performance
These observations about fear and responsibility are things you need to understand psychologically; don’t repeat them like a mantra before going on. When you’re out on stage, don’t think about whether you’re succeeding or not, just focus on the performance, think about your message, about the feelings you’re trying to convey to your audience. Focus on what you want the audience to see, or hear or feel.

Group support
Members of your group or your crew can remind you, “Look, this is just one performance, it’s not your career. Do the best you can and try to enjoy it.” Sometimes saying something humorous can be enough to deflect tension and ease anxiety. And also remember that the other members of your group are there in the same boat with you and if something should go wrong, they’re there to help cover for you, and that can give you confidence.

Relaxation techniques
Before you go on, take a few deep breaths, but remember, always exhale first. When people are anxious they tend to engage in shallow breathing, which means that they are not emptying their lungs fully after each breath. So they’re full of stale air, lacking oxygen, and when they try to breathe in they say, a little panicked, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” So remember, blow out first and then take a few deep breaths.

Another thing to do before a performance is clench your fist very hard, then release and stretch your fingers all the way out. Do this two or three times and it should relax the muscles. Those two exercises performed together should be enough to take the edge off, to provide a little bit of physical relaxation just before a performance. Another thing I recommend is taking a throat lozenge, which relaxes the throat, and take a drink of water to hydrate your mouth and throat.

Can’t please all the people
You have to accept that people in the audience have different preferences and like different things. It doesn’t mean that what you’re delivering is invalid. If people don’t love your performance it doesn’t mean they don’t like you, it simply means they like or prefer something different.

Watch “Sita Sings the Blues

Watch “Sita Sings the Blues” online

Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by e-mail. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.”

Array Item Script

What is an array?

An array is a list that contains a series of related items.
The first item in the array is referenced as item [0].
-----------------------------------------

Declaring and initializing the array:

Declaration and initializing are the terms used to set up the array and load the array with the initial content items.
Initializig an array to hold song files might looks like the following:
var songs:Array = [“song1.mp3”, “song2.mp3”, “song3.mp3”];
-----------------------------------------

Referencing an item:

When recalling an item from an array, and assigning the content to a variable, the array reference looks like the following: n = ArrayName[0]. You will notice that this reference returns the first item in the Array.
-----------------------------------------

WhatNext function :

The function WhatNext(NextOne) returns the next item. When the variable “NextOne” is greater than the number of items in the array, “NextOne” returns to the value of zero.

function WhatNext(NextOne):Number {
if (NextOne>songs.length-1) {
NextOne = 0;
} else {

NextOne++;

}
return NextOne;
